Parker Homestead State Park, Montana

Parker Homestead state park is one of the smallest yet easiest to find and photograph in Montana It's located right on the highway between Three Forks and the Louis and Clark Caverns near the Jefferson River. Usually when I had taken a picture or two here, it's either been too cloudy, downright rainy, or just that the light was all wrong (once it was so smoky from a near bye forest fire that you could hardly see it, let alone breathe). We were staying in Three Forks, Mt. and almost as a afterthought decided to drive the few miles to check out the lighting and such. As you can see, the lighting was just great, getting toward latter in the afternoon in early June, yet with those storm clouds still lurking around. I was pretty content with the results.

Can you imagine living and raising a family in a homestead like this? Many did!. Unfortunately, examples like this are disappearing at an alarming rate not only in Montana but other states as well. What a valuable heritage to be lost.

A quick blerb from the Parker Homestead State Park Web site:

"This small, one-acre park preserves a simple sod-roofed log cabin built in the early 1900s. Pioneers across Montana accepted the hardships, limits, and opportunities of such frontier homes. Step into one family’s past. The site offers great photo opportunities and a quick visit to our past."
